Spending my Time by OtisBee Spending my Time by OtisBee
this is where i spend most of my time when i'm at home.

a friend once called it the "Herrenzimmer", like Grandpa had one.
you can take a breather there and maybe have a drink or two.
you can come to senses or let your mind go.

well, i don't know if "Herrenzimmer" really fits.
it's just a room i like spending my time in.

Very sunny, elegant, and modern room Otis! This appears to be an upstairs room? I can certainly understand how this environment would contribute both to relaxation as well as the type of clean, crisp talent that most of your art seems to embody.

Love the plants and the way they're arranged! I sense great feng shui. Sun

Are you using a mac?!
did you leave CAD?

yeah, i'm using a mac (win7 also installed) for 3 years now. :XD:
my previous PC became older and older and so at some point an upgrade was in order. i never really thought about purchasing a mac, but a friend of mine made me an offer for a 27" iMac i couldn't refuse. but believe it or not, the first thing i installed on it was win7, so that i can still use and work on CAD.

but as time went by i found myself more and more using the osx instead of the windows system. and i have to admit i really like it. what can i say, being more on osx made it less intrigueing over the months to fire up the win7, just to listen to my music and look at the fine CAD skins.

i haven't really left CAD, but the development and support came down to a minimum and i don't think that i will create a skin at any time soon, if at all. i miss creating things in photoshop, i can tell you. but then again there isn't much to customize in osx. not that i don't want to, but it's way more difficult than in windows. and if that's not enough, there isn't anything that comes even half as close to CAD as i want to. CAD is sooooo superior over Bowtie and what they're all called. besides, iTunes is a very bad substitute for the winamp i came to love over the years. 3 years and i still wasn't able to get used to that.

but everything else in osx is phantastic. never i would have imagined that i'd say this, but i never regreted making the switch, even with the lack of CAD and winamp and the customizability in general. if you ever consider switching, then i can only recommend that.

nice to you. haha

I think ATM everybody is seeking for performance and usability.
I'm using only themes on win7 and a dock.

I tried to use Fedora on my laptop, but last days i discovered i was 2 versions delayed.  I think i'm very stupid, but i couldn't customize it very well. maybe I install a newest version of it or try some hackintosh rs.

no, unfortunately i don't. sorry. :hmm:
reverting back to a point where the explorerframe is still there isn't an option?
but then again, i saw that you've already contacted ^neiio about it and i'm sure that once he reads your request he'll post a working mirror asap. ;)

Will you be making a new amakris cad? :P

well, to be honest all my creational works have come to a pause and i don't know if that will be only temporary or in fact permanently. i must admit that i still have many ideas for new skins and making them real could be fun indeed, but then again i'm caught in procrastination, because since i have switched to using mac osx i wouldn't be able to really use and enjoy my own creations as much as i did back then when i was still on windows, you know. i mean, i still have windows installed and i even launch it once or twice a month, but then again the use of mac osx also made me listen to my music from inside of mac osx (namely iTunes). of course i'd be able to still boot into windows (while still being on mac osx) and then fireing up winamp re. CAD to listen to my music, but what's the use of running those in the background somewhat underneath the mac osx surface, if i won't be able to actually see the cool CAD skins then? i mean, that's what these skins are made for, right? to see them, to look at them and to enjoy them. another point is the additional resources in terms of cpu- and ram-usage this would take to run both windows and mac osx at the same time. so, mostly i refuse to launch windows and just stick to mac osx.

long story short: i sometimes really miss creating things and to transform ideas into "real life" and maybe i'll one day overcome the procrastination for a new project or two. the feedback of the community when i release something new has always been a great thrill and that alone is quite an enticement to start something new, but on the other hand when i created something, then it has always been for myself in the first place as well, so it appears somewhat absurd to me to be on mac osx and then create something to be used with windows, which i now only launch on the rarest occasions.

i hope that makes sense. :XD:

I fully understand. I'm a minimalist so I truly understand what you mean about unwanted unnescessary system usage. I'm actually quite happy for you at the same time, because as much as I love my windows. That mac monitor resolution is just exquisite!

Otis, I hope this is not going to be the last. This is rather heartbreaking news. There's not many designers left who create with passion. When I say with passion, I mean the designers are never quite satisfied with their work and even if we think you guys are doing supreme you guys still keep re-testing and updating and gosh, doing so much just to make us a new toy.

Even if there is a possibility of you not coming back, I will always spend time to time on your page just browing through your gallery. Inspiration. Motivation. Best fused with Creative Perfection.

Whatever the future holds of Otisbee releases, YOU will always stand as one of the greatest #dA designers!!

wow Steven.... :faint:

...dude, this is one of the nicest things someone has ever said to me. i'm sooo sorry that i haven't replied earlier. truth is, i didn't know what to say. still don't actually. wow man, thank you so very much! i had no idea that me and my work are viewed that way by anybody. utterly blown away, that's what i am each time i read your lines.

it all started as and always was a hobby. i love music, a friend gave me an old computer as a gift, i started customizing the desktop experience, discovered winamp, fell in love with CD Art Display, had trouble with it at some point, met Carlos the developer in the CAD forum, shared some ideas, became creative and then eventually i released my very first skin ever. that's the short version of it. but the great things where still about to happen. the feedback i'd get from people i didn't realize in their amount actually using and enjoying what i created. that's what kept me going and made me come back again and ever again. i got hooked. pretty much so. if i now look back, then i'm very much amazed about what made me capable of doing what i did. i mean, back then i got an idea, fired up the photoshop, dived in, created and assembled and then started thinking about the presentation and the name.

your words of appreciation now reach me in a state where my creativity has long lost its focus. whoa, they bring back the taste of that passion you mentioned. i miss those times. oh yes i do. and the mac has somehow taken all that away from me. shame on you apple. think different, they say. dude, if you consider switching too, please think twice and also consider how much you enjoy customizing your OS. the mac osx is a great and highly reliable and stable OS. it is fun using it as it just works. but you'll definitely miss the windows world when you want a plethora of options to customize the hell out of the OS. speaking in car terms, a mac brings you a great driving experience and an excellent product with top-ranking reviews and stuff, but you don't get to choose which color the seats will have or what the radio plays or what's hanging down your rear view mirror. you'd get the best quality money can buy, but then again you'd be held out front always kept at an arm's length away from where the fun starts and where individuality is starting to become serious business. different tires? a fancy shmancy steering wheel? carpet with bling? "Nuh-uh, we here at apple know better what you like." strangely enough, they're right most of the times. but being a customizer by heart you'll have to cope. i can tell ya. ;)

Steven... once again, thank you so much for all the great and touching words. you made my day more than just once with those. and thank you just as much for your coming back the past days to appreciate and fav the OtisBee releases. everything you've said and done means very very much to me.

Awesome photo dude - nice to see you're still alive & kicking on dA... :-)

Question 1: what software do you use for manipulating the photo?

Question 2: is the bike just for decoration, or do you actually leave your playboy bachelor pad and exercise on it...? :-p
Reply
:iconotisbee:
OtisBee Featured By Owner Nov 28, 2012   Interface Designer
yeah, i'm alive and yeah, i'm kicking. not always recognizable by the naked eye, but still it can be called kicking. :D

that software is a photoshop plugin called TopazClean by topazlabs. [link]
it has some fantastic presets and the manipulation above was done in merely two clicks. TopazClean is one of my all time favourites. the most boring photos can be turned into something completely different while still remaining somewhat the same. if you know what i mean. :eager:

hey, if you like you can send some of your photos over and i'll edit them for you and send them back to you. just so you can get an idea of what the plugin is capable of.

and the bike... oh my, what can i tell you about the bike without exceeding time and dimension? it was basically the one and only occasion in which i took that bike upstairs. i had to change the tires, because the others had worn off to something critically thin. the new ones are now called "Marathon" and the vendor promised that i could drive over nails, broken bottles and atom bombs without them tires ever to take a hit. i need that for my way to work and back.

but back to the bike. it's in my posession since 1991. it's a Gary Fisher "montare" and painted in the most awesome blue a bike can ever have. i usually wouldn't choose blue for a bike, nor would i insist on anything else being blue. but this blue grew on me over so many years and i can tell you it's perfect for this bike. this bike ha been a true and loyal companion. robust and reliable. and it looks cool, too. do you know the feeling that when you find a jacket and you immediately know that it's Your jacket once you've slipped in it? you don't find these jackets very often, but they exist and you know them when you put them on. well, for jackets this is happening every once in a while, but for bikes i find this to be a rather rare occasion. the bike met me and i took it home. and then that day, after more than 21 years, i eventually took it upstairs and then froze the moment on film. :faint:

it was nice that, when i took those photos, my bike was also there.

so, to answer your question: the bike isn't for decoration, but i wouldn't call it excersising either. :bucktooth:

yeah, bikewise you're right. but that bike is a true and loyal vehicle to me for 21 years now. it's a 1991 Gary Fisher "Montare". i only use it in the streets to get from here to there, you know. it could be better, but it isn't too bad of a bike either. it's a robust one. i like it and i don't fancy a different one. what can i say? it's my bike. :XD:

man, i just came back from your profile and from reading your journal [link] and it's so nice to read that you would like to start a project and are eager to help.

buddy, and i am touched by you saying that you guys need me back in custo.

i'd love to, Lukas. i really do.

i can imagine so many things that would be fun to work with you in one way or another, but then again this would require some little bit more commitment and dedictaion. from my side, that is of course. more than i'm currently feeling or experiencing, you know. i've become a lazy ass couchpotato. there i say it.

i can remimisc about the great times in custo, the inspiration, the creativity. the excitement that builds up when the day of actually presenting it to the community comes closer. ah yeah, fun times.

as i said, i can imagine that this would be fun again. but my real life is quite comfy and lazy right now and i seem to like it. what can i say?

i'm sorry. :pat:

:giggle:

Oh yeah, it absolutely is a great room to relax in. :iconyesyesyesplz:

that piece of furniture on the left of that fan actually hosts quite an exquisite whisky bar. you open it from the top and towards you and out slides a tray with different sorts of tumblers and nosing glasses in which you can then pour the scotish gold to your hearts desire. leaning back on that couch after a long and stressing day and taking a sip is what easily can round it up the missing nuances.

and boy is it nice to spend time with friends in here.
